LUCEY DISHES 12 ASSISTS AS JAYS AVOID ANOTHER ROAD UPSET, COME BACK TO EDGE WIDENER, 57-55

CHESTER, Pa. --- Gina Kaiser hit a pair of free throws with under a minute remaining to lift Elizabethtown over Widener 57-55 in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday night.

Brenda Wessel led the Blue Jays with 16 points and nine rebounds while Kim Boback and Shauntae Stancil each chipped in with ten points apiece as Etown (12-5, 8-2) maintained its hold on first place in the MAC Commonwealth League. Point guard Allison Lucey dished out a season- and Conference-high 12 assists on the night, one more than she collected in the Blue Jays' previous game, a 95-65 win over Susquehanna on January 31.

Melanie Weindel scored 16 points to pace Widener (6-12, 3-7), which led 50-41 late in the game before Etown rallied to prevent the upset. The Blue Jays scrapped back to a 55-55 deadlock before Kaiser went to the line and nailed the most important of her eight points.

Trailing by two, Widener had a chance to tie or win the game with 15 seconds remaining, but failed to get a shot off in the game's final moments.

The win moved Etown coach Yvonne Kauffman one step closer to the 500th victory of her women's basketball career. She is currently two wins away with a record of 498-159.

The Blue Jays next take the court on Saturday, February 7 at home against regional power Scranton. Game time is 6 p.m.
