ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL KAUFFMAN ABSENT FOR 500TH WIN AS BLUE JAYS OVERTAKE WESTERN MARYLAND IN OVERTIME, 86-84 WESTMINSTER, Md. --- Coach Yonnie Kauffman may have been a no-show for her latest milestone, but, luckily, her team arrived just in time. Trailing by 14 points at the half, Elizabethtown roared back to overtake Western Maryland in overtime, 86-84, in Mid-Atlantic region action on Thursday. Despite remaining at home due to illness, Kauffman became the second coach in the history of Division III women's basketball to win 500 games, joining Philip Kahler of St. John Fisher. Kim Boback led five Jays in double figures with 18 points, while Shauntae Stancil added 16 points, 12 rebounds and six assists for her seventh double-double of the season. Katie Haley led all scorers with 27 points on 10-for-14 shooting for the Green Terror while teammate Kathi Snyder added 25. Early on it appeared that Western Maryland (13-9) would postpone the Etown festivities, as Haley and Snyder poured in 12 first-half points apiece to give the Green Terror a 47-33 edge at the break. The Jays, however, chipped away at the lead throughout the second half before finally pulling even in the final two minutes. Down 76-72, Stancil converted a pair of layups on consecutive trips down the floor to send the game to overtime, the Blue Jays first foray into OT in nearly two years. In the extra frame, the teams went back and forth before Boback put the Jay up for good, 85-83, on a jumper with 43 seconds remaining. After Western Maryland point guard Erin Murphey and Etown's Allison Lucey exchanged single free throws to make it 86-84 in favor of the Blue Jays, Murphey missed a last-second three-point attempt to give Etown the historic victory. Also chipping in for the Blue Jays (14-6) were Gina Kaiser with 13 points and Abbie Fabian with 12 points and eight rebounds. Murphy finished with 13 points for the Green Terror while Patricia Russo added 11 points, all in the first half. Among active women's basketball coaches in all divisions, Kauffman became the ninth coach to reach the 500-victory plateau. With 773 wins in its 70-year history, the Elizabethtown women's basketball program is the winningest in NCAA history. Etown returns to action on Saturday, February 14 at home against Albright College. Game time is 6 p.m. With a win, the Blue Jays would clinch at least a share of the MAC Commonwealth League title.
