ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WESSEL CONTINUES STELLAR PLAY, LEADS ETOWN WITH 20 POINTS IN 97-72 WIN OVER JUNIATA HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- Brenda Wessel scored a team-high 20 points and Elizabethtown shot 61.5 percent from the field en route to a 97-72 romp past Juniata in Middle Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday. With the win, the Blue Jays (16-6, 11-2) clinched the Commonwealth League title and home court advantage throughout the MAC playoffs. Four other Blue Jays scored in double figures, including Shauntae Stancil and Abbie Fabian with 15 points apiece, Kim Boback with 14 and Carmen Chiles, who tied her career-high with 12. Danny Young led all scorers with 21 points in addition to seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals for Juniata (5-15, 3-10). Etown got off to a fast start and never looked back. Wessel, the Commonwealth's reigning player of the week, scored ten of her 20 points during the game's first 13:08 to give the Blue Jays a 36-13 lead. A 6-0 run at the end of the first half put the Blue Jays up 51-29 at the intermission and the visitors never led by fewer than 20 points the rest of the way. The 97 points were the most racked up by an Etown squad since a 100-60 victory over Juniata on February 16, 1995. Point guard Andrea Thompson added six points while dishing out a team-high six assists. Juniata's Mandy Pile chipped in with 16 points in the losing effort. The win was the Blue Jays' fourth in a row and tenth in their last 12 games. Etown has won the Commonwealth League championship in each of the five years since the MAC realigned in 1993. Etown wraps up its Commonwealth League season on Saturday, February 21 at Moravian College. Game time is 2 p.m. The Blue Jays will open the MAC playoffs at home on Tuesday, February 24 with opponent and time to be determined.
