WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
BLUE JAYS SCRAP BACK FOR 67-61 WIN AT SUSQUEHANNA; CHILES HAUNTS CRUSADERS (AGAIN) WITH 20 POINTS AS JAYS POST WIN NO. 797 SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- It wasn't easy, but the countdown continues for the Elizabethtown women. Carmen Chiles (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) scored a team-high 20 points and Jesse Goldstein (Robbinsville, N.J./Lawrence) added 13 clutch second-half points to lift the Blue Jays over Susquehanna, 67-61, in MAC Commonwealth League action on Saturday. With the win, Etown improved to 16-1 (9-0 MAC Commonwealth League) and ran its winning streak to 14 games, the program's best in ten years. Shauntae Stancil (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) added 14 points and eight rebounds as the Blue Jays collected the program's 797th all-time victory, continuing its quest to become the first women's basketball program in NCAA history (all divisions) to record 800 wins. The trio of Kristen Venne (24 points), Karyn Kern (17) and Sandy Jenkin (13) combined to score 54 of Crusaders' 61 points on the afternoon. With the loss, Susquehanna fell to 11-7 (6-3 MAC Commonwealth League). Down 30-25 at halftime, Susquehanna used 11 points from Kern and seven Etown turnovers to build a 46-41 lead with 8:18 remaining in the game. Goldstein answered with the second of three clutch three-pointers to cut the Crusader lead to two and Stancil followed with a layup to knot the game at 46. After Kern and Stancil traded layups, Venne converted one of two free throws to give Susquehanna its last lead of the game at 49-48 with 5:59 left in regulation. Chiles drilled a jumper to put the Blue Jays ahead for good at 50-49. Abbie Fabian (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) then made one of two free throws and Stancil knocked down a jumper to give Etown a 53-49 advantage with 4:30 remaining. Venne answered with a driving layup to cut the Blue Jay lead to two, but Goldstein drilled another clutch three-pointer and Stancil followed with a driving layup of her own to make it 58-51 Etown with 2:02 left. Susquehanna could get no closer than five points in the game's final minutes en route to their second loss to Etown this season. The Blue Jays defeated the Crusaders, 82-68, on December 4, a game in which Chiles scored a career-high 27 points. Allison Lucey (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame)
helped the Etown cause with five assists and three steals while Kim
Boback (Croydon, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) added seven points and a season-best
