FABIAN SCORES CAREER-HIGH 25 POINTS TO LEAD ETOWN PAST WIDENER, 81-65;
CHILES ADDS 22 AS JAYS MOVE WITHIN TWO WINS OF 800
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Abbie Fabian (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) scored a career-high 25 points and added 12 rebounds and five assists to lead Elizabethtown past Widener, 81-65, in MAC Commonwealth League action on Wednesday. With the win, the Blue Jays improved to 17-1 (10-0 MAC Commonwealth League) and ran their winning streak to 15 games, the program's best in a decade. Carmen Chiles (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) added 22 points and seven boards to pace Etown to its 798th all-time victory. The Jays, currently ranked second in the region and 14th in Division III, need two more wins to become the first women's basketball program in NCAA history with 800 victories. Mandy Joachim poured in a career-high 27 points along with ten rebounds for Widener (12-6, 6-4 MAC Commonwealth League) while teammate Kim Rooney added 16 points in the losing effort. After watching the Pioneers cut their 13-point first-half lead to 36-31 by halftime, the Blue Jays opened up a double-digit advantage in the opening minutes of the second half. Joyce Johnson drilled one of her two three-pointers to pull Widener within 38-34, but Etown used four points from Fabian and four from Chiles to stretch its advantage to 46-34 with 16:19 remaining. The Pioneers then went on a 12-6 run capped by a pair of Rooney baskets that made it 52-46 with 12:32 left. Etown's Jesse Goldstein (Robbinsville, N.J./Lawrence), however, answered with a three-pointer to give the Jays a 55-46 edge en route to the victory. Etown shot 32-for-65 (49.2 percent) from the field for the game while holding the Widener offense to a 19-for-62 (30.6 percent) performance on the night. Kim Boback (Croydon, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) also scored in double figures for the Blue Jays with 11 points and tied a career high with six assists. Etown returns to action on Saturday, February
6 in the Mid-Atlantic regional showdown against the University of Scranton.
The Lady Royals are currently ranked first in the region and fifth in Division
