SCRANTON CAPTURES BATTLE OF REGION'S BEST, 70-58; COUNTDOWN TO 800 ON HOLD AS ETOWN LOSES FOR FIRST TIME IN 16 GAMES

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The countdown to 800 is on hold, at least for now.

Gillian McGovern scored 18 points and pulled down ten rebounds to lead Scranton past Elizabethtown, 70-58, in a battle of the Mid-Atlantic region's top teams on Saturday.  The Blue Jays (17-2) fell for the first time since an 81-72 loss to Marymount on November 22 and saw their decade-best winning streak snapped at 15 games.

Shauntae Stancil (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) led Etown with 18 points while Kim Boback (Croydon, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) added 16 points and Carmen Chiles (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) scored ten points and collected a career-best 16 rebounds.

The Blue Jays, ranked second in the region and 14th in Division III, lost to Scranton (19-1, 5th in Division III) for the 12th straight time dating back to an 83-79 win in the 1991 Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs.      Etown remains two victories shy of becoming the first women's basketball program in NCAA history to record 800 wins.

The Blue Jays travel to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday and could play for the milestone as early as Thursday at home against Western Maryland.      Scranton charged out of the gate, taking a 30-10 lead midway through the first half before Etown fought back to get within 36-26 at halftime.

The Royals, however, opened a 20-point edge in the early minutes of the second half and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way.

Allison Lucey (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame) dished out a team-high six assists for Etown.  Kate Dougherty tossed in 14 points, including three three-pointers, for Scranton, which ran its winning streak to 16 games.      The Blue Jays return to action on Tuesday, February 9 at Lebanon Valley College.  Game time is 7 p.m.
