ETOWN'S STELLAR SEASON ENDS WITH 87-70 LOSS TO NYU IN NCAA SECTIONAL SEMIFINALS SCRANTON, Pa. --- All-America candidate Jehan Clark scored a game-high 30 points and Jessi Nowak added 17 points to lead New York University past Elizabethtown, 87-70, in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic sectional semifinals on Friday at the University of Scranton. With the loss, the Blue Jays wrapped up their season with a 25-4 record, the program's highest win total since 1989.Abbie Fabian (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) led Etown with 20 points while Kim Boback (Croydon, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) added 19 points and eight rebounds. Carmen Chiles (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) also scored in double figures with 14 points and added a team-high nine rebounds in the losing effort. After a Boback jumper pulled Etown within 47-44 with 18:17 remaining, the Violets (24-3) went on a 23-7 run over the next eight minutes to put the game away. Clark scored ten of her 30 points during that stretch and finished the game with a 13-for-21 shooting performance from the field. The Blue Jays cut the lead to 74-62 when Chiles converted a three-point play with 5:17 left, but could get no closer in the final minutes. NYU, appearing in its seventh straight NCAA Sweet 16, used three three-pointers from Clark late in the first half to build a 40-29 lead. A three-pointer from Melina Nappi-Kaehler made it 43-33 in the final minute of the half, but Fabian scored the last three of her 17 first-half points on a three-point play and Andrea Thompson (West Lawn, Pa./Holy Name) converted two free throws to cut the Violet lead to 43-38 heading into the locker room. NYU shot 36-for-62 (58.1 percent) from the floor on the game while scoring the most points against an Etown team since Marymount poured in 93 points against the Blue Jays in 1996. Elizabethtown was appearing in its first NCAA
Sweet 16 game since winning the national championship in 1989. Boback
finished her career with 1,316 points, good for seventh on the program's
all-time scoring list. Shauntae Stancil (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem)
scored six points against NYU to finish in eighth place with 1,313 career
points.
