McDaniel Defeats Etown 21-14, Blue Jays Conclude Season 5-9 Overall

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell at home in a non-conference game to McDaniel, 21-14, Monday to conclude its second season with a 5-9 overall record. McDaniel, formerly known as Western Maryland, wrapped up its 2003 season 6-9 overall.

Liz Fretz (Parkerford, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored the game's opening goal 50 seconds after the whistle for Etown, but McDaniel responded with three goals of its own over the next six minutes. Fretz scored again on an assist from Stephanie Boyle (Folsom, PA/Ridley) at 7:30, and Ally Edel (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) scored on an assist from Fretz at 8:50 to tie the score at 3-3. From there, McDaniel rattled off another three unanswered goals until Fretz scored again at 19:18 into the game. That was Etown's final goal of the first half as McDaniel tallied five more to take an 11-4 lead into halftime.

After McDaniel went up 12-4 just 1:30 into the second half, Elizabethtown began to creep back into the game. At 33:00, Edel scored on an assist from Jen Manns (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine), and Manns followed with a goal of her own just 36 seconds later. A McDaniel goal at 33:43 gave the Green Terror a 13-6 lead, but Edel scored again for Etown at 35:34. Another McDaniel goal came at 35:45, but Fretz struck back for Etown at 38:45 and Sarah Scholl (Forest Hill, MD/John Carroll) scored at 41:00 to cut McDaniel's lead to 14-9. Two McDaniel goals in the next 23 seconds put the Green Terror up 16-9.

Etown's comeback began in earnest at 43:21, when Amanda Simpson (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) scored for the Blue Jays. Fretz followed with her fifth goal of the day at 49:50, and Jackie Brenton (Laurel, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) scored on a Manns assist at 50:59 to cut McDaniel's lead to 16-12 with nine minutes remaining in the game.

From that point, McDaniel put the game away by scoring at 51:16, 51:32 and 53:20 to go up 19-12. Manns scored for Etown at 53:40 to cut the gap to 19-13, but McDaniel scored again at 56:26. Manns scored her third goal of the day on an assist from Edel at 56:40 to cut the lead to 20-14, but McDaniel scored the game's final goal at 58:00.

Fretz led the Blue Jays in goals with five, and she had one assist to lead the team with six points. She also led Etown in draw controls with six. Manns finished with three goals and a team high of two assists. Edel finished the game with three goals and one assist, and Boyle led the team with six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Tracy Kessler (Towson, MD/Hereford) led McDaniel in goals with five.
