ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Elizabethtown Wins MAC Opener, First Game at Ira R. Herr Field, 11-8 over FDU-Florham ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown got its first win of the 2004 season and won its Middle Atlantic Conference opener with an 11-8 victory over FDU-Florham at home Saturday. In addition to being Etown's first home game and MAC contest of the season, it was also the Blue Jays' first game in their new home, Ira R. Herr Field. Saturday's women's lacrosse game was also the first non-soccer game played at Herr Field, which has hosted three NCAA Division III Final Fours, in the stadium's history. After no scoring for almost fifteen minutes at the start of the game, Elizabethtown rattled off three goals in the span of two minutes beginning at 14:43. By halftime, the Blue Jays held a commanding 6-0 lead. FDU-Florham got its first goal 3:11 into the second half, but Etown struck back just 25 seconds later to hold a 7-1 lead. From there, FDU-Florham mounted a comeback, and by 41:39 into the game, Etown's lead was reduced to 7-6. Etown scored two more goals at 44:02 and 46:65 to increase its lead to 9-6, and FDU-Florham scored at 49:51 to narrow the gap to 9-7. Etown scored a pair of goals just 33 seconds apart at 50:21 and 50:54 to go up 11-7, and FDU-Florham scored the final goal of the game at 55:03. Liz Fretz (Parkerford, PA/Owen J. Roberts) led the Etown offense with four goals, two assists, six points, three ground balls and five draw controls. Amanda Simpson (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) tallied two goals, two assists and four points for Etown, and Jackie Brenton (Laurel, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) scored two goals and had two assists for three points. Ally Edel (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) scored one goal and had two assists for three points as well, and Odessa Armstrong (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) led Etown in caused turnovers with three while scoring one goal. Pam Sagehorn (Frisco, TX/Bridgewater-Raritan, NJ) and Lisa Parry (Goucester, NJ/Gloucester) were FDU-Florham's top goal scorers with two each, and Andrea Clare (Holland, PA/Council Rock) led the Devils in assists with two.
