Etown falls to Montclair State, 12-5

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown took on undefeated Montclair State University at home Friday in the make-up of a previously rained out game and fell 12-5. It was the lowest goal total to which Montclair State (7-0), which is currently ranked second in the nation in NCAA Division III in scoring offense, has been held to all season. The seven goal margin of victory was also the second-slimmest margin thus far this year for Montclair State, which is also second in the nation in scoring margin. Etown drops to 3-8 overall with the non-conference loss.

Montclair State scored the game's first two goals at 5:57 as Brianna Gillin (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) scored on an assist from Cathy Homiek (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), and as Homiek scored an unassisted goal at 7:56.

Jen Manns (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) scored on a Liz Fretz (Parkerford, PA/Owen J. Roberts) assist at 9:05 to give Etown its first goal. At 19:19, Etown tied the score at 3-3 as Ally Edel (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) scored on another Fretz assist.

Montclair State took a 5-3 lead into halftime as Nicole LaRocca (Shamong, NJ/Shawnee) scored twice at 21:53 and 23:55 on assists by Homiek.

There was no scoring for the first 17 minutes of the second half, until Gillin broke the silence with a goal at 47:06 off another Homiek assist. By the time five minutes were left in the game, Montclair State had pulled ahead to a 10-3 lead. Odessa Armstrong (Pasadena, MD/Northeast) struck back for Etown at 56:20 with her second goal of the game, and a Sarah Scholl (Forest Hill, MD/John Carroll School) goal for Etown at 57:45 cut Montclair State's lead to 10-5. The visiting Red Hawks then scored two more goals in the final 1:40, as Gillin and Erin Balint (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) scored.

Armstrong led Etown in goals scored with two, and Fretz had team highs of two assists and four draw controls. Michelle Collier (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) led Etown in ground balls with five, and Stephanie Boyle (Folsom, PA/Ridley) led the Blue Jays in caused turnovers with four. Etown goaltender Kelly O'Connor (Newtown, CT/Westover School) made 13 saves in the Blue Jay net, including nine in the first half alone.

Montclair State's leading scorers were LaRocca and Gillin, each of whom tallied three goals. Homiek, who currently leads the nation in assists, added eight more to her season total, as well as one goal scored.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Tuesday, April 13 against Susquehanna University in a 4:00 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference game.
