Elizabethtown Downs Alvernia 15-5 in Blue Jays' Home Opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown improved to 2-4 overall with a non-conference win over Alvernia College by a 15-5 score Thursday. It was the Blue Jays' 2005 home opener. Alvernia dropped to 0-3 overall with the loss.

Alvernia scored the game's opening goal 2:28 after the opening draw as McKenna Shafer scored. Etown's Angie Eder (Eldersburg, MD/McDonogh School) struck back with a goal off a Sarah Gilson (Ocean View, NJ/Ocean City) assist 6:09 into the game. At 9:19 into the game, Eder scored again to give Etown a 2-1 lead, and the Blue Jays were ahead to stay. By halftime, Etown held a 7-3 advantage. Alvernia scored twice within the first eight minutes of the second half, and Etown concluded the game with five consecutive goals over the course of the last twenty minutes.

Six Blue Jays – Eder, Gilson, Jen Manns (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine), Danielle Grooms (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson), Liz Fretz (Parkerford, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and Michelle Collier (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) – scored a pair of goals over the course of the game. Also scoring single goals were Katie Braid (Parkton, MD/Hereford), Dana White (Freeland, MD/Hereford) and Ally Edel (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School). Braid led Etown in assists with two, and Eder, Gilson, Grooms and Manns each notched single assists. Grooms led Etown in ground balls with four.

Shafer and Laura-Beth Diggs were Alvernia's top scorers with two goals each, and Tracy Pyne added one goal.

Elizabethtown will return to action Saturday, April 2 when it hosts King's College (Pa.) in a 3:30 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference game.
