Muhlenberg Scores 14-12 Comeback Win over Etown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Muhlenberg scored the game's final four goals to come from behind and defeat Elizabethtown 14-12 at Etown in a non-conference game Wednesday. Etown dropped to 4-6 overall with the loss, while Muhlenberg improved to 7-4 with the win.

Etown sprung to a 3-0 lead in the game's opening 10 minutes as Liz Fretz (Parkerford, PA/Owen J. Roberts) scored twice and Jen Manns (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) scored once. By 12:52 left in the first half, Muhlenberg tied the score at 4-4 on a free position goal by Taylor Armstrong (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes). Fretz then scored for Etown at 11:41 and Danielle Grooms (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) scored at 9:54 to give the Blue Jays a 6-4 lead, and Shannon Donohue (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) scored for Muhlenberg with 8:43 left to make the score 6-5 at halftime.

Etown scored three goals in the first 6:16 of the second half to boost its lead to 9-5, but Muhlenberg cut the Blue Jays' lead to 10-9 by 15:09 left in the game. By the time 10:33 was left to play, Etown's lead stood at 12-10, and Muhlenberg followed with a barrage of four goals between 8:08 and 5:24 to seal the win.

Muhlenberg had six free position shots in the game and made four of them. Etown, by contrast, had just two free position shot attempts. Muhlenberg also held a 16-12 advantage in draw controls and a 27-25 edge in shots.
Fretz led Etown in goals scored with five, and she had one assist as well. Manns led Etown in assists with three and in ground balls with six, and she scored one goal. Amanda Simpson (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) tallied two goals for Etown. Dana White (Freeland, MD/Hereford) led Etown in draw controls with four.

Muhlenberg's top goal scorer was Courtney Tapkas (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) with six goals, and Christa Carlstrand (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) scored two goals and had two assists for the Mules. Shannon Donohue (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) scored two goals and had one assist for the Mules, and she led Muhlenberg in draw controls with five.

Etown will return to action at home Saturday, April 16 in a Middle Atlantic Conference home game against Drew University beginning at 1:00 p.m.
