ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S LACROSSE Second Half Run Lifts Elizabethtown over Virginia Wesleyan, 12-7, in Season Opener DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. --- A 9-0 run in the second half lifted Elizabethtown College to a 12-7 win over Virginia Wesleyan College in the Blue Jays’ season opener Sunday. Virginia Wesleyan, which went 14-4 last year, drops to 0-2 with the loss. The game was held at the United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, Pa. due to ice cover on Elizabethtown’s Wolf Field. Virginia Wesleyan pulled out to a 5-3 lead by halftime and took a 6-3 lead 32 seconds into the second half. The Marlins did not score again until 1:27 was left in the game, as Elizabethtown rattled off nine unanswered goals in a 23 minute span.
Sophomore attacker Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) led Elizabethtown in scoring with five goals and two assists for seven points. First-year midfielder Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) added two goals and one assist, and she led the Blue Jays in draw controls with three. Fellow first-year student Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) also scored two goals and tallied one assist for the Blue Jays. First-year student Alisha Sangrey (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) and sophomore Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled) each notched a goal and an assist, and first-year Katie Caprincio (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) added one goal. Sophomore defender Danielle Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) led Elizabethtown in ground balls with six and in caused turnovers with three. Goaltender Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) made four saves in 56:55 to earn the win, while first-year goalie Becca Watkins (Herndon, VA/Westfield) made two saves in the final 3:05 for Etown. Jillian Boyd (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) led Virginia Wesleyan in scoring with three goals, in ground balls with six, in caused turnovers with three, and in draw controls with three. Goaltender Ashley Sipple (Leesburg, VA/Ashburn Stone Bridge) made 13 saves in the Marlin net. Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Thursday, March 1 against McDaniel College in a 4:00 p.m. game. At Downingtown, Pa.
