Blue Jays Double Up Messiah, 14-7

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- A 6-0 run early in the second half broke a 5-5 tie and boosted Elizabethtown College to a 14-7 victory over Messiah College in Middle Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) netted five goals and added an assist for the Blue Jays (8-4 overall, 5-1 MAC), while junior Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) added four goals and three assists as Elizabethtown outshot Messiah 43-23 on the afternoon, including 23-8 in the second half.

The Blue Jays never trailed in the contest, though the Falcons fought back from several two-goal deficits to force a 5-5 tie on a goal by Jessica VanHook with 28:07 remaining in the second half. However, sophomore Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) gave the Blue Jays the lead for good with her second goal of the match with 26:43 remaining.

Byrnes added two goals during the 6-0 run, while sophomore Alisha Sangrey (Columbia, PA/Hempfield), Foley and first-year student Meg Cassels (Downingtown, PA/Great Valley) also found the net to help Elizabethtown to an 11-5 lead with 13:01 left.

Cassels finished with two goals and an assist for the Blue Jays, while Kreis netted a pair of goals and junior Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/Homeschooled) posted two assists.

Messiah (7-6 overall, 4-2 MAC) was led by Kara Geiman, who scored two goals, while five other players added one goal apiece.

Kreis and junior Danielle Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) shared the team lead with four ground balls for the Blue Jays, while three Falcons had three ground balls apiece.

Junior Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) finished with nine saves in goal for Elizabethtown, and Jen Venter made 16 stops for Messiah.
