ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Senior Bill Van Winkle (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) won the opening bout of Elizabethtown's 36-10 loss to Muhlenberg Saturday on a pin at 1:18 to become the fifth wrestler in Etown history to reach the 100 career win plateau. Elizabethtown came back to win its second match of the home triangular match over Baptist Bible, 35-18.
Van Winkle pinned Muhlenberg's Jed Wulfekotte early in the first period of his 125 pound match to give Etown a 6-0 lead and get his 100th career win. Muhlenberg struck back with a decision at 133 and a pin at 141 to go ahead 9-6. The Mules never looked back, winning decisions at 149 and 165, picking up a forfeit at 157, and winning on pins at 174 and 184 pounds to go ahead 33-6.
Etown's Art Mattes (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) won a 13-5 major decision at 197 pounds to put the Blue Jays' score into double digits. Muhlenberg won a 4-0 decision at heavyweight to end the match.
Muhlenberg then defeated Baptist Bible 36-16 in the second match of the day.
Etown took on Baptist Bible for the final match of the day. Van Winkle added another win on a pin only 19 seconds into the match at 125 pounds. Baptist Bible struck back with a pin at 133 to tie the score at six. Then the Blue Jays opened the flood gates.
Woody Adams (Lititz, PA/Valley Forge Military Academy), who is actually a 125 pounder, wrestled at 141 pounds and won on a pin at 2:14. Brian Alwine (Hanover, PA/South Western) followed with another Etown pin at 149 pounds in 57 seconds.
Elizabethtown forfeited at 157 pounds, but Etown's Brett Koser (Danville, PA/Danville) won a 16-5 major decision at 165 pounds. Baptist Bible struck back with a pin at 174 pounds, but Etown's Brian Servetnick (Philadelphia, PA/Washington) followed with a 19-8 major decision at 184 pounds. Mattes followed with a pin at 197 pounds, and Josh Boyer (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) wrapped up the match with a 7-2 heavyweight win.
Now that Van Winkle has reached 100 wins, fellow senior Mattes is not far behind. With two wins Saturday, Mattes now has 98 career wins. He will get his chance to reach the century mark when the Blue Jays return to action in the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships Friday, February 16 and Saturday, February 17. Wilkes University is hosting the MAC Championships this year.
