ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WRESTLING

Blue Jays Down Gettysburg 32-18

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College earned its third consecutive dual match win and improved to 4-3 in 2006-07 with a 32-18 home win over Gettysburg College Tuesday night.

Gettysburg began the match in the hole 6-0 after having to forfeit the 125 pound weight class. Elizabethtown extended its lead to 10-0 as Eric Rhoads (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won a 19-5 major decision, narrowly missing the extra team point for a technical fall, at 133 pounds. Elizabethtown got another big major decision at 141 pounds as Drew Winegar (Chatsworth, NJ/Seneca) posted a 14-0 victory there to give Elizabethtown a 14-0 lead for the match.

Gettysburg began to mount a mid-match comeback at 149 pounds, getting a win on a pin to cut the Elizabethtown lead to 14-6. A Gettysburg win on a 7-4 decision at 157 pounds followed by another Bullet pin at 165 pounds put Gettysburg ahead for the only time in the match, 15-14.

That lead proved extremely short-lived, as Elizabethtown’s Brett Epps (Perth Amboy, NJ/Rutgers Prep.) needed only 19 seconds to pin his opponent at 174 pounds and give the Blue Jays the lead once again, 20-15. Josh Herbert (Middletown, OH/Madison) followed with another pin for Elizabethtown, this time taking 4:41, at 184 pounds to extend the Blue Jays’ lead to 26-15.

A Gettysburg forfeit at 197 pounds gave Elizabethtown a 32-15 lead, and Gettysburg concluded the match by winning a 3-2 decision at heavyweight.

Elizabethtown will return to action at the Wheaton College ( Ill.) Invitational Friday, January 26 and Saturday, January 27.
