ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WRESTLING Elizabethtown Rallies to Close out Dual Match Schedule with 21-16 Road Win over Wilkes
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College rallied from a 13-6 deficit to defeat former Middle Atlantic Conference rival Wilkes University 21-16 on the road Saturday. The Blue Jays’ final dual match of 2006-07, the win gave Elizabethtown a 6-5 record in dual matches for the year, its best since the 1999-00 season. Wilkes wrapped up its dual match schedule with a 10-9 record. Wilkes took a 4-0 lead with a major decision win at 125 pounds to open the match. The Blue Jays’ Terry Bartholomew (Point of Rocks, MD/Brunswick) struck back with a 10-7 win on a decision at 133 pounds to cut the gap to 4-3. Wilkes gained another win on a decision at 141 pounds to take a 7-3 lead. Etown 149 pounder Bud Croswell (Newark, DE/Sanford) pulled out a 7-5 overtime win to again pull the Blue Jays within one point of Wilkes, 7-6.
Wilkes posted an overtime decision win of its own at 157 pounds and followed with a 6-1 decision win at 165 pounds to take a 13-6 lead. At 174 pounds, first-year student Brett Epps (Perth Amboy, NY/Rutgers Prep.) quickly brought Elizabethtown back into the match with a win by fall in 1:39, and the Blue Jays again trailed by one, 13-12. Elizabethtown took the lead for the first time at 184 pounds when Josh Herbert (Middletown, OH/Madison) won on another pin in 4:40 to put the Blue Jays up 18-13. Wilkes narrowed the gap to 18-16 on a 3-2 decision at 197 pounds, and for Elizabethtown’s second dual match in a row, the outcome hinged on the final bout at heavyweight. Once again, Mike Daub (Duncannon, PA/Susquenita) won on a decision for Elizabethtown in the final bout of the day, this time winning 4-2. Elizabethtown will next travel to Manchester College in Indiana to take part in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships Saturday, February 17. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the NCAA Division III Championships March 2 and 3. Participating in the 2007 Midwest Regional include four former MAC teams, Delaware Valley, Elizabethtown, Lycoming and Messiah, along with 11 others: Case Western Reserve, MacMurray, Manchester, Millikin, Mount St. Joseph, Olivet, Rose-Hulman, Thiel, Wabash, Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson.
