ETOWN DEFEATS NEWPORT NEWS APPRENTICE 31-10, FALLS TO ANDERSON 26-16 ON FIRST DAY OF VIRGINIA DUALS

HAMPTON, Va. --- Elizabethtown stumbled in its bid to repeat as small college champion at the Virginia Duals wrestling tournament Friday, as the team fell to Anderson in its second match of the day, 26-16. The Blue Jays began the day by crushing Newport News Apprentice, 31-10.

Art Mattes (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) won over his Newport News opponent by a 14-4 major decision. All other Etown victories in that match were either regular decisions or forfeits. Against Anderson, Mike Fierro (Bethlehem, PA/Parkland) defeated his opponent in a fall at 3:54, and Mattes registered another major decision victory with a 16-5 win.

Elizabethtown (5-2) will wrestle again in the consolation semifinals at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, and could reach the 3rd and 4th place match in the afternoon.
