ETOWN, COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY WIN IN SHUTOUTS ON FIRST DAY OF BLUE JAY CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown and the College of New Jersey each opened their respective 2000 seasons with shutout victories on the first day of the Blue Jay Classic Tournament, held at Elizabethtown College.

The College of New Jersey downed William Smith, 2-0, in the first game, and Elizabethtown defeated Keene State (NH), 3-0 in the second game.

The College of New Jersey (1-0) scored both goals in the first half, with the first coming at 18:00 into the game as Beth Hoeflinger (Somerset, NJ/Franklin Township) netted the ball off a corner kick from Gia Rosamilia (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany).

Cara Gabage (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) scored the second goal 26:30 after the start of the game. William Smith (0-1) goaltender Leah Cornwell (Caledonia, NY/Wheatland-Chili) had fourteen saves as the Herons were out-shot 22-2 by the College of New Jersey.

In the second game, Eileen Fretz (Stroudsburg, PA/Notre Dame) scored the first goal of the Blue Jays' season 18:02 into the game. Andrea Thompson (West Lawn, PA/Holy Name) followed with a goal for Elizabethtown (1-0) 38:37 into the first half.

Kierstin Rowe (Harrisburg, PA/Lower Dauphin) scored the final goal at 66:12 on an assist from Nicole Hundley (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township).

The Blue Jay Classic concludes Sunday, September 3 with the College of New Jersey playing Keene State at 12:00 p.m. and Elizabethtown taking on William Smith at 2:00 p.m.
