Ithaca Nips Etown, 3-2, in Overtime, on First Day of Blue Jay Classic; College of New Jersey Blasts North Carolina Wesleyan, 5-0; St. Lawrence Downs Christopher Newport, 3-2

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown opened its 2002 season with a 3-2 overtime loss to Ithaca while hosting the Blue Jay Classic Saturday. In the other Blue Jay Classic games, the College of New Jersey defeated North Carolina Wesleyan 5-0 and Christopher Newport fell to St. Lawrence, 3-2.

Ithaca got on the scoreboard first against Elizabethtown when the Bombers' Christine Dorney (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) netted a ball deflected by Etown goalkeeper Amy Weid (Turnersville, NJ/Pitman) 14 minutes into the game. Etown struck back at 28 minutes as Aileen Musser (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) scored off a cross pass from Eileen Fretz (Stroudsburg, PA/Notre Dame). A goal by Ithaca's Angela Dufield (Claremont, NH/Stevens) at 44 minutes gave the Bombers a 2-1 lead entering halftime.

Etown tied the score again at 70 minutes as a deep direct kick by Megan Halladay (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) squirted through the hands of Ithaca keeper Liz Bishop (Trumbull, CT/St. Joseph). Regulation play ended in a 2-2 tie, which Ithaca's Becca Berry (Lowville, NY/Lowville Academy) broke with a goal at 95:33.

In the day's previous game, the College of New Jersey, ranked fifth in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) pre-season NCAA Division III poll, pounded North Carolina Wesleyan, a 2001 NCAA tournament participant, 5-0. Alison Baker (Succanussa, NJ/Roxbury) led the Lions with two goals. Also scoring for the College of New Jersey were Katie Egan, Cara Gabage (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), and Gia Rosamilia (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany). North Carolina Wesleyan goaltender Rachel Whicker (Kernersville, NC/East Forsyth) made 18 saves in the net as the Battling Bishops were out-shot 32-5.

St. Lawrence defeated Christopher Newport 3-2 in the day's first game.
