Etown Falls to Christopher Newport, 4-3 in Overtime, on Final Day of Blue Jay Classic; Ithaca Defeats North Carolina Wesleyan 2-0; College of New Jersey Knocks off St. Lawrence, 4-1

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown dropped its second consecutive overtime game to fall to 0-2 in 2002, as Christopher Newport (1-1) defeated the Blue Jays 4-3 in the 98th minute of the final game of the Blue Jay Classic. In the day's earlier games, Ithaca (2-0) defeated North Carolina Wesleyan (0-2) 2-0, and the College of New Jersey (2-0) defeated St. Lawrence (1-1) by a 4-1 score.

Etown got on the scoreboard first against Christopher Newport on a goal by Courtney Phillips (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg), assisted by Danielle Grubb (Danville, PA/Danville) at 42:00.

Christopher Newport tied the score at 1-1 at 61 minutes when Ashleigh Dota (Woodbridge, VA/Hylton) dribbled through the Elizabethtown defense to score. Etown took a 2-1 lead at 64 minutes when Grubb scored the first goal of her collegiate career off an assist from Jessie Cromley (New Columbia, PA/Milton).

Christopher Newport evened the score at 2-2 at 82 minutes on a goal by Kathleen McCormack (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown). A goal on a direct kick by Megan Halladay (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) two minutes later gave Etown a 3-2 lead, but one minute after that Dota once again beat the Etown defense to knot the score up at 3-3.

Following the expiration of regulation time, overtime began with Elizabethtown firmly in control of the ball for about five minutes, during which time Christopher Newport goaltender Carola Riegner (Fairfax, VA/Oakton) made several spectacular saves. Riegner compiled ten saves on the day. Christopher Newport took control of the game for the final two minutes, culminating in Natalie Stallings' (Poquoson, VA/Poquoson) game-winning goal for the Captains at 97:40.

In the previous game, Ithaca defeated N.C. Wesleyan 2-0, getting its first goal at 17:56 courtesy of a Dawn Rathbone (Woodstock, CT/Woodstock Academy) corner kick that arced and sailed into the net. Becca Berry (Lowville, NY/Lowville Academy) scored Ithaca's final goal at 65:08.

In the first game of the day, the College of New Jersey scored got its four goals from Alison Baker (Succanussa, NJ/Roxbury), Cara Gabage (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), Erin Pivovarnick (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham), and Stephanie Peters (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central). Meredith Eisenhut (Mowhawk, NY/Mowhawk Central) scored the lone goal for St. Lawrence with just 35 seconds remaining in the game, prompting a celebration on St. Lawrence's side, as the College of New Jersey, currently ranked fifth in the nation, allowed just one goal in the entire 2001 season.
