Etown and F&M Battle to 1-1 Draw

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The 2003 Blue Jays' quest to become the first Elizabethtown College women's soccer team ever to begin a season 5-0 fell short Wednesday night, as Etown hosted Franklin & Marshall and battled the local rival to a 1-1 stalemate through 110 minutes. At 4-0-1, Elizabethtown remains off to its best start since 1997. Franklin & Marshall's record now stands at 1-1-1.

Franklin & Marshall got its lone goal just 5:33 after the opening whistle, as Amanda Zambrano (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) fired off a long shot from the top of the box that arced just above the hands of Etown goaltender Amy Weid (Turnersville, NJ/Pitman) and just below the crossbar to score.

Etown controlled possession of the ball throughout much of the game, especially from the second half onwards. The Blue Jays out-shot the Diplomats 18-9 for the game, and they held a 13-4 advantage in shots after halftime. Etown also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Blue Jays' only goal that got past F&M keeper Melissa Ruff (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), who made 11 saves, came at 60:23 as forward Becca Young (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) dribbled through two F&M defenders and brought Ruff out of the net before sinking her shot on the ground. A similar Young attempt late in regulation time resulted in narrowly missing the upper right-hand corner of the goal.

Etown out-shot F&M 3-1 in the first overtime period, with all shots being stopped by Ruff and Weid. Neither team managed to get off a shot in the second overtime period. Weid finished the game with four saves for Etown.

Etown will return to action on the road Saturday, September 13 against Dickinson at noon.
