Etown Improves to 6-0-2 with 3-1 Win over Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabehtown improved to 6-0-2 overall in 2003 Wednesday night with a 3-1 home win over Drew (4-2-2).

The Blue Jays struggled in the first half as Drew controlled the game early. Although Etown scored first when Becca Young (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) put the finishing punch on a dribbled shot by Courtney Phillips (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) at 10:15, that goal was scored on Etown's first real scoring opportunity after Drew had already fired off several shots on goal. Drew's Catherine Mueller (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) tied up the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal just 3:35 later.

Control of the ball had begun to shift in Etown's favor late in the first half, and by halftime the Blue Jays had out-shot Drew 8-7. Etown's defense took full control of the game in the second half, as Meghan Halladay (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven), Dana Moyer (Harleysville, PA/North Penn) and Elyse Campbell (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) combined in the backfield to put a premature end to almost all of Drew's possessions. As a result, the Blue Jays held a 15-3 advantage in shots after halftime. Etown also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks in the second half after both Elizabethtown and Drew totaled two corner kicks prior to halftime.

Kelly McCauley (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) scored what turned out to be the game-winner for Etown at 70:14 by netting a ball that dropped in front of her from off a corner kick. Young added an insurance goal, her second of the game, off an assist from defender Amy Fredrick (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) at 86:16.

Drew goalkeeper Danielle Vento (Marlboro, NJ/Freehold Boro) made nine saves, and Amy Weid (Turnersville, NJ/Pitman) made five saves to pick up her sixth win of the season in the Etown goal.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Saturday, September 27 against Scranton in a 3:00 p.m. game.
