Elizabethtown Opens Season with 1-0 Win over Salisbury in Blue Jay Classic; Ninth-Ranked TCNJ Defeats ECSU 4-0

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College won its 2005 season opener 1-0 over Salisbury University Saturday on the first day of Etown’s annual Blue Jay Classic. In the other game of the Blue Jay Classic Saturday, nationally ninth-ranked The College of New Jersey defeated Eastern Connecticut State University 4-0.

In the Etown-Salisbury game, the lone goal was scored 7:23 after the opening kickoff by Blue Jay first-year student Brooke Dotterer ( Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts), who scored off an assist by junior sweeper Dana Moyer ( Harleysville, PA/North Penn).

Etown out-shot Salibury 15-6 over the course of the game and 10-1 in the first half. The Blue Jays also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Blue Jay goalkeeper Dawn Mellen ( Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) made four saves in the complete-game shutout.

In the TCNJ-ECSU game, Brittny Boyd scored a pair of goals, and Dana DiBruno scored one goal and assisted both of Boyd’s strikes. TCNJ carried a 3-0 lead into halftime, and Beth Pagano scored the final goal of the game at 81:22.

The Blue Jay Classic will conclude at Elizabethtown Sunday, September 4. The College of New Jersey will face Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m., and Elizabethtown College will face Eastern Connecticut State University at 3:00 p.m. Because the Blue Jay Classic does not follow a tournament format, there will be no champion.
