ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Caitlin Mayo's second goal of the game with 5:43 elapsed in overtime gave Roger Williams University a 2-1 victory over host Elizabethtown College on the opening day of the Blue Jay Classic women's soccer tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Carly Hoskins

Mayo, who had given the Hawks (1-0-0 overall) a 1-0 lead early in the second half, took a through pass from Amanda daCunha and fired home the winning goal after the Blue Jays (0-1-0 overall) had tied the game with 1:08 left in regulation on a penalty kick by junior Carly Hoskins (Bangor, PA/Bangor).

After a scoreless first half, Mayo scored with 34:44 left in the second half to give Roger Williams a 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays applied tremendous pressure on the Hawk defense from there, finally breaking through on the penalty kick by Hoskins which was awarded after senior Jenny Fromuth (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) was brought down in the box by Roger Williams keeper Jen Garside.

Elizabethtown had the first four shots of the overtime period prior to Mayo's goal, and finished with an 18-5 edge in shots for the contest. The Blue Jays also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) played the first half in goal for the Blue Jays and made two saves, before giving way to first-year player Lindsey Butler (Salem, NJ/Woodstown). Garside finished with seven saves for Roger Williams.

In the other game on Saturday, two-time defending NCAA Division III runner-up College of New Jersey downed Frostburg State 3-1 by scoring three straight goals after the Bobcats scored just four minutes into the contest. The Lions finished with a 26-3 edge in shots, including all 16 in the second half.

On Sunday, Roger Williams will battle College of New Jersey at 1:00 p.m. followed by Elizabethtown and Frostburg State at 3:00 p.m. in the final day of the Blue Jay Classic.
