ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S SOCCER Gretchen Geiger Scores Hat Trick to Lead Elizabethtown to 4-0 Win over Susquehanna ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Junior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) scored a hat trick to boost Elizabethtown College to a 4-0 victory over Susquehanna University in non-conference women's soccer action at Ira R. Herr Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Geiger scored twice in the match's first 13 minutes and added her third goal with 18:49 remaining as the Blue Jays (12-1-1 overall) tied a program record set in 1996 by extending their unbeaten streak to 13 matches (12 wins, one tie). Sophomore Erin Scott (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) also scored for the Blue Jays, who posted their seventh straight victory overall and their 12th shutout in 14 matches this season. Geiger opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the match as she took a pass from junior Jenna Russo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) following a corner kick by Scott and scored. She added her second goal at the 12:59 mark as she manuevered past the Crusader defense and fired a shot to the far side of the net to give Etown a 2-0 lead. Just over four minutes later, Scott tallied her second goal of the season as she took a pass from first-year student Mallory Murphy (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) and fired a shot into an open net at 16:15 to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead. Geiger finished off the hat trick with 18:49 remaining as she knocked home a corner kick by first-year student Katelyn Roderick (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township). She is the first Etown player to score three goals in a game since teammate Brooke Dotterer pulled off the feat against Widener on Oct. 14 of last season. Elizabethtown finished with an 11-3 edge in shots over the Crusaders (6-6-0 overall) and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. All three Blue Jay keepers saw action in the match, as junior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) played the first half and first-year students Lindsey Butler (Salem, NJ/Woodstown) and Kristen Kelly (Bensalem, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) split the second half, with Kelly making the only Etown save of the match. Meredith Tompeck made four saves for Susquehanna. Susquehanna (6-6-0) vs. Elizabethtown (12-1-1) Shots: Susquehanna 3, Elizabethtown 11 |
