Union Downs Elizabethtown 1-0 in NCAA Women's Soccer First-Round Match

GENEVA, N.Y. --- Stephanie Cannuli scored midway through the first half as Union College defeated Elizabethtown College 1-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer tournament at William Smith College on Saturday afternoon.

The Dutchmen (16-4-0 overall) advance to play Worcester State College, which defeated previously unbeaten William Smith 2-0 in Saturday's opening contest, on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Jays (17-4-1 overall) outshot Union 17-13 and held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to solve Dutchmen keeper Melissa McDonald, who made five saves in the win.

Union tallied the game's only goal at 26:54 when Cannuli scored her third goal of the season off an assist by Caitlin Cuozzo.

Junior Angela Freeland (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) finished with six saves in goal for the Blue Jays.
