ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Etown Players Compete in ITA Regional Championships; Trimbey Reaches Blue Singles Draw Semifinals, Passes 40 Career Singles Win Mark FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- Elizabethtown players competed in the Wilson Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships, held at the University of Mary Washington Saturday and Sunday, and produced several strong individual performances. Playing in the Championship Singles Draw, Blue Jay number two singles player Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) reached the round of 16 after starting from a pool of 64 players. She won her opening round match 6-2, 6-2, and she won the second round match 6-2, 6-2 as well before running into Amy Staloch from Carnegie Mellon University, the number one seeded player in the tournament who finished the 2004-05 academic year ranked second in the South Atlantic Region and fourth in all of NCAA Division III by the ITA, in the round of 16. Shapiro fell in that match 6-1, 6-0 to complete the weekend with a 2-1 mark in singles competition. In the Blue Singles Draw, both senior Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) and first-year student Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) wound up facing each other in the quarterfinals after progressing from the opening round of 64. Trimbey won her round of 64 match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and Yu won 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 64. Also, Etown junior Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) won her round of 64 match 6-1, 6-2. In the round of 32, Trimbey won 6-3, 6-3, Yu won 6-4, 6-1, and Lander won 6-1, 6-1. In the round of 16, Lander fell 6-0, 6-0, but Trimbey rallied to win a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 match, and Yu won 6-3, 6-4, thereby setting up the quarterfinal round match between the two, which Trimbey won 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals Monday morning, Trimbey fell 6-1, 6-0 to Katie Duncan. By tearing through the Blue Singles Draw, Trimbey boosted her career win total in singles matches to 43, the most by an Etown player since the Middle Atlantic Conference realigned in 1993. She still has a way to go to pass the Etown all-time singles record, held by Jodi Weidman ’91, who is known to have won at least 50 singles matches in her career from 1988 to 1991.
