Elizabethtown College Repeats as Commonwealth Conference Women’s Tennis Team Champion; Blue Jays Down Moravian 8-1 in Championship Match; Kristy Trimbey Passes Former Etown Combined Singles & Doubles Win Record

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Elizabethtown defeated Moravian College 8-1 on the road Saturday to win the Commonwealth Conference team championship for the second year in a row. The win came against a Moravian team that had beaten Etown 5-4 earlier in the season, and it was the Blue Jays’ first road win against Moravian since 1995. Etown improves to 10-2 overall with the win, while Moravian drops to 14-2 overall with the loss.

In the opening doubles matches, Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and Laurelyn Foderaro (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock Mennonite) cruised to an 8-1 win at number one for Etown. At number two, Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) eked out a 9-7 win for the Blue Jays. Etown’s number three team of Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) and Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) won 8-4.

After sweeping doubles competition, Etown won five of the six singles matches. Shapiro won a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at number one, and Foderaro won 6-3, 6-0 at number two. At number five, Lander won 6-3, 6-1. Etown won a pair of close matches at numbers four and six, as Yu won 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 at number four, and as Trimbey won 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 at number six.

By getting a pair of wins Saturday, Trimbey passed the old Elizabethtown record for most combined singles and doubles wins in a career. The old record of 95 combined wins was formerly held by Jodi Weidman ’91. Trimbey now has 97 combined singles and doubles wins and is closing in on becoming the first Blue Jay tennis player ever to reach the 100 career win plateau. Trimbey also currently possesses the Etown record for most career doubles wins with 49. The Etown all-time record for most career singles wins remains in Weidman’s possession with 57.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road at Immaculata University in a 3:30 p.m. match Tuesday, October 18.
