Etown Competes at MASCAC Individual Singles & Doubles Championships; Blue Jays Take Home Three Singles Titles; Kristy Trimbey Becomes First Etown Player to Record 100 Career Wins

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Individual singles and doubles entries from the fourteen teams of the Commowealth Conference and Freedom Conference competed against each other in the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) Championships at Lehigh University Saturday and Sunday, and Elizabethtown’s entries did quite well for themselves. Etown players won MASCAC titles at three of the six singles flights. Several significant milestones in the history of the Etown program were also passed this weekend.

Winning the number two singles title was fourth-seeded sophomore Laurelyn Foderaro (Harlyesville, PA/Christopher Dock Mennonite), who won 8-1 in the opening round, won 8-2 in the second round, won 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals, and upset second-seeded Alison McDonald of Wilkes University 6-2, 6-4 in the championship round.

Winning the number five singles MASCAC title for the second year in a row for Etown was top-seeded junior Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett). This year, she had a bye in the first round, won 8-3 in the second round, won 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals, and defeated second-seeded Jennel Yelito of Moravian College 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match.

Winning the MASCAC championship at number six singles for Etown was top-seeded senior Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West). After a first round bye, she won 8-5 in the second round, defeated fourth-seeded Jotanna O’Connell of Wilkes 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals, and won 6-1, 6-1, over second-seeded Katie Cooke of Moravian in the finals. The three additional singles wins this weekend boosts her career singles victory total to 51, making her only the second Etown player to cross the 50 career win plateau in singles. The Etown record for singles wins in a career is currently held by Jodi Weidman ’91, who totaled 57 singles victories.

Trimbey also became the first Etown player ever to reach the 100 career win plateau in combined singles and doubles victories this weekend. Between her three singles wins and two doubles wins Saturday and Sunday, She boosted her combined win total to 103, with 51 wins in singles and a program-record 52 career wins in doubles.

In the other three singles flights this weekend, Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) at number one, Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) at number two and Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) at number four all reached the second round before bowing out.

In doubles, Etown’s top-seeded number one team of Shapiro and Foderaro finished as the MASCAC runners-up after receiving a bye in the first round, winning 8-3 in the second round and 8-3 in the semifinals, and falling in a close match 9-7 to the second seeded team from DeSales.

Etown’s number two doubles team of Smith and Yu, which was seeded second, bowed out in the second round with an 8-6 loss.

The fate of the number three doubles flight remains undecided and will be concluded at Elizabethtown at a time to be announced next week. Top seeded Lander and Trimbey of Etown will face the third seeded team from Moravian in the championship match then. Lander and Trimbey had a first round bye, won 8-3 in the second round, and won 8-2 in the semifinals to reach the championship.
