Elizabethtown Crunches Susquehanna 8-1 to Open 2006-07 Season; Lander Gets 50th Career Singles Win 

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College opened its 2006-07 season at home Thursday with an 8-1 win over Commonwealth Conference rival Susquehanna University. Susquehanna drops to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference with the loss.

Elizabethtown swept the three doubles competitions to open the match. The number three combo of senior Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) and first-year student Cathie Martinez (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) won an 8-0 whitewash, and the number two team of first-year student Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and sophomore Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) cruised to an 8-1 win. The number one doubles team of senior Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and junior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) posted an 8-6 win.

In singles, Yu breezed through a 6-0, 6-1 win for Etown at number five, while Martinez had a 6-2, 6-1 win at number four. Lander won 6-4, 6-1 at number six, giving her the 50th singles victory of her collegiate career. She became only the third player in Elizabethtown history to reach the 50 singles win plateau. At number three, Swarr won 6-2, 6-4 for Elizabethtown, and Shapiro won 6-3, 6-3 at number two.

Elizabethtown will return to action Saturday, September 9 in a 1:00 p.m. match when the Blue Jays host Franklin & Marshall College.
