Elizabethtown Edges Franklin & Marshall 5-4

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College improved to 2-0 overall Saturday with a 5-4 victory at home over local rival Franklin & Marshall College, which drops to 0-1 in 2006-07. Elizabethtown improved to 11-21 all-time against F&M with the win, and it was the Blue Jays’ second win over the Diplomats in the teams’ last three meetings. Prior to the Blue Jays’ previous win in 2004, F&M owned a 14-match unbeaten streak over Etown that spanned from 1985 to 2003.

Elizabethtown took a 2-1 lead following the completion of the doubles matches, as Alice Yu (Athens GA/Clarke Central) and Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won 8-2 at number two, and as Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) and Cathie Martinez (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) won a close 9-7 pro set at number three.

The Blue Jays then won three of the six singles matches to squeak by with the win. At five singles, Yu delivered a 6-0, 6-0 win for Etown, while Lander won 6-1, 6-1 at six singles. Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) eked out a 6-4, 6-4 win at two singles to seal the victory for Etown.

In the final spring 2006 Fila/ITA regional rankings for NCAA Division III, Franklin & Marshall was ranked 12th in the Atlantic South Region, while Elizabethtown was ranked 13th in the Atlantic South. Each of the last three meetings between Etown and F&M have been decided by a score of 5-4, with Etown winning in 2004 and 2006, and with F&M winning in 2005.
