ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Blue Jays Compete at ITA Southeast Regional Championships FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- Elizabethtown’s individual entries went 5-4 in doubles competition and 4-9 in singles competition at the unscored 2006 ITA Southeast Regional Championships, held at the University of Mary Washington Saturday and Sunday. Five Etown players competed in the Championship Draw in singles and four were in the Championship Draw in doubles. One Etown player was in the Blue Draw in singles and two were in the Blue Draw in doubles. In the Championship Singles draw, three Blue Jays advanced out of the initial round of 64 and into the round of 32. Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton), who usually plays second singles in dual matches for the Blue Jays, won her round of 64 match 7-5, 7-5 and fell 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 32. Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), who plays third singles in dual matches for Etown, won her round of 64 match 6-2, 7-5 before falling 6-0, 6-1 in the round of 32. Cathie Martinez (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South), who plays fourth singles in dual matches for Etown, won 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the round of 64 and fell 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 32. In the Blue Singles draw, Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett), who plays sixth singles this year in dual matches for the Blue Jays, won her round of 64 match 6-2, 6-3 before falling 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 32. In the Championship Doubles draw, Elizabethtown’s pair of Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Shapiro, who usually play one doubles, fell 8-4 in the opening round of 32. However, Smith and Shapiro worked their way back through the consolation bracket to reach the consolation semifinals. They won 8-0 in the initial championship consolation round of 16, and they won 8-4 in the consolation quarterfinals before being eliminated 8-4 in the consolation semifinals. The Elizabethtown second doubles pair of Swarr and Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) won their opening championship round of 32 by an 8-3 score to advance to the round of 16, where the tandem fell 8-3. In the Blue Doubles draw, Elizabethtown’s third doubles team of Lander and Martinez made it all the way to the quarterfinals. They won 8-0 in the opening round of 32 and won 8-2 in the round of 16 before falling 8-4 in the quarterfinals. Elizabethtown will return to action at home Tuesday, September 26 in a Commonwealth Conference dual match against Messiah College at 3:30 p.m. Wilson ITA Southeast Regional Singles competition Doubles competition |
