ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Elizabethtown Completes Undefeated Conference Regular Season Schedule with 8-1 Win over Lebanon Valley; Heather Lander Ties Etown Career Singles Win Record
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College completed its fall 2006 Commonwealth Conference regular season schedule with an undefeated record following an 8-1 win over Lebanon Valley at home Monday. Etown improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference with the win, while Lebanon Valley dropped to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference with the loss. Also, Elizabethtown senior Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) earned her 57th career singles victory in Monday’s match, tying the College’s career singles win record set by Jodi Weidman ’91. By going undefeated in regular season conference play, Elizabethtown has secured the top seed in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs and will be the host site for those playoffs October 14 and 15. Elizabethtown will host the fourth seeded team at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 14, and the second seeded team will play the third seeded team at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 14 at Elizabethtown. The conference championship match will be played between the winners of Saturday’s matches at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 15 at Elizabethtown. Elizabethtown began Monday’s match by sweeping the three doubles pro sets to take a 3-0 lead. Senior Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and junior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) won 8-6 at number one for Etown. At second doubles, first-year student Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and sophomore Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) won 8-1, and Lander and first-year student Cathie Martinez (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) won 8-3 at third doubles for Etown. In singles, Shapiro won 6-4, 6-2 at number one, Swarr won 6-2, 3-6, (10-4) at number three, Martinez won 6-2, 6-2 at number four, Yu won 6-0, 6-0 at number five, and Lander won 6-1, 6-4 at number six to tie the record. Lander is now 57-7 in singles matches in her career. Elizabethtown will return to action at home Thursday, October 5 against Dickinson College in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match. at Elizabethtown, Pa. |
