Elizabethtown Blanks Penn State-Behrend 9-0 

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College won the first of its two matches at home Saturday 9-0 over Penn State-Behrend to improve to 9-1 overall in 2006-07. Penn State-Behrend dropped to 13-1 with the loss, its first of the season.

Elizabethtown swept the three doubles pro sets to open the match, with Cathie Martinez (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) and Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) winning 8-1 at third doubles. At first doubles, Stacy Shaprio (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) won 8-6, and the second doubles team of Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) also won 8-6.

In singles, the back half of Elizabethtown’s lineup surrendered only one game in six sets as Martinez breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at four, Yu won a 6-0, 6-0 blowout at five, and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) triumphed in a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash at six. At first singles, Shapiro won 6-1, 6-1, while Smith won 6-2, 6-1 at two, and Swarr won 6-3, 6-1 at three.

Elizabethtown will face Grove City College later today beginning at 3:30 p.m.
