Elizabethtown Beats Dickinson 6-3; Heather Lander Breaks Etown Combined Win Record; Commonwealth Conference Playoffs Loom 

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College improved to 11-1 overall with a 6-3 victory over Dickinson College Wednesday in a non-conference match. In the match, Etown senior Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) broke the previous Blue Jay combined career win record of 112 held by Kristy Trimbey ’06 as she improved to 114-20 for her career combined between singles and doubles results, 59-7 in singles and 55-13 in doubles.

Etown won two out of the three doubles matches, with Lander and Cathie Martinez (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) teaming up to win 8-1 at three for Lander’s record-breaking 113th combined career win. Also, the one doubles team of Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/ Moorestown) won 8-6 for Etown.

In singles, Shapiro won 6-0, 6-2 at number one. Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) won 6-2, 6-2 at number three, and Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) won 6-2, 6-1 at number five. Lander won 6-0, 6-2 at number six for career combined win number 114, and she extended her program record in career singles wins to 59.

Elizabethtown will return to action as the host of the Commonwealth Conference team championship tournament Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15. The Blue Jays, which have the top seed in the tournament, will face fourth-seeded Lebanon Valley College in the first semifinal match at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. At 2:00 p.m. Saturday, second-seeded Moravian College will face third-seeded Messiah College in the other semifinal match at Elizabethtown. The winners of the two semifinal matches will meet in the conference title match at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Elizabethtown.

Unlike previous years, this year the winner of the Commonwealth Conference team championship will receive an automatic berth in the May 2007 NCAA Division III tournament.
