Elizabethtown and Moravian Advance to Sunday’s Conference Championship with Semifinal Wins; Etown Beats Lebanon Valley 5-0; Moravian Downs Messiah 9-0 

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- On the first day of the Commonwealth Conference team championship tournament at Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon, tournament host Elizabethtown and Moravian College both advanced to Sunday’s championship match with semifinal wins. The top-seeded host Blue Jays defeated fourth-seeded Lebanon Valley College 5-0 to advance in the day’s first match. In the second match of the day, second-seeded Moravian defeated third-seeded Messiah College 9-0 to advance. Elizabethtown improved to 12-1 overall on the season, and Moravian improved to 10-1 overall with the wins. Lebanon Valley dropped to 9-6 overall, while Messiah dropped to 10-3 overall with the losses.

In the Etown-LVC match, the Blue Jays swept the doubles pro sets to open the match. The third doubles pair of Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) and Cathie Martinez (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) was the first to win, taking their set by an 8-0 margin. The number one pair of Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) followed with an 8-3, win, and the number two pair of Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) and Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) followed soon after with another 8-3 win for Etown.

Yu was the first to win a singles match for Elizabethtown, 6-0, 6-0 at number five. Lander followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at number six to clinch the team win for Elizabethtown and conclude the match.

Elizabethtown and Moravian will meet in the conference title match at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Elizabethtown. It is the third year in a row the two teams will square off for the title.

Unlike previous years, this year the winner of the Commonwealth Conference team championship will receive an automatic berth in the May 2007 NCAA Division III tournament.
