Etown Matches 1996 Win Total with 8-1 Smashing of Lycoming

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown matched its win total from 1996 Friday, improving to 9-3 overall with an 8-1 home blowout of Lycoming. Etown finished 9-4 overall in 1996, the last time the Blue Jays had as high a win total as they currently possess.

Elizabethtown won every match but number one doubles. At number three doubles, the Blue Jays' Lisa Mervine (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) and Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) registered an 8-1 win, and the number two team of Mel Parenteau (Marydel, MD/North Caroline) and Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) won 8-2.

In singles, Mervine had the most crushing victory for Etown, winning a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at number four. Parenteau had a 6-1, 6-0 win at number three, and Trimbey won 6-1, 6-1 at number six. Lisa Abel (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) also gave up just two games, winning 6-2, 6-0 at number two for Etown. Lander picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win at number five, and Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) won 6-2, 6-4 at number one.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Sunday, October 5 at 1:00 p.m. in a key match against Moravian. Currently, both Etown and Moravian are tied for second place in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth League with 5-1 conference marks. Only the top two teams of the MAC Commonwealth and Freedom Leagues make the MAC playoffs, so the winner of the Etown/Moravian match Sunday will advance to the playoffs, while the loser will not. Elizabethtown has not been in the MAC playoffs since 1996.
