Lisa Mervine and Heather Lander Stay Alive through First Day of MAC Individual Championships

MADISON, N.J. --- The doubles tandem of Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) and Lisa Mervine (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) remained the only Elizabethtown entry still alive in the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference individual singles and doubles women's tennis championships at the conclusion of the first day of competition Saturday.

The pair knocked off a doubles team from King's 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round, and upended a doubles team from Wilkes that received a bye to the second round in the longest match of the entire day, winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. As a result, Lander and Mervine will face the number two-seeded pair from FDU-Florham at 9:00 a.m. Sunday in the lone quarterfinal match yet to be played.

Etown's other doubles team, fifth-seeded Mel Parenteau (Marydel, MD/North Caroline) and Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West), bowed out in the quarterfinals. The pair received a first round bye and defeated a team from Drew, 7-5, 6-3 in the second round before falling to the third-seeded team from Moravian, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

In singles, fourth-seeded Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) defeated Lebanon Valley's Sophia Kwan 6-1, 6-0 in the second round after getting a bye in the opening round. Shapiro fell to fifth-seeded Laura LeVan of DeSales, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Etown's other singles entry, Lisa Abel (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) defeated Albright's Bethany Adams in the first round, 6-3, 6-3, before falling to seventh-seeded Megan Michael of King's 6-4, 6-0 in the second round.
