Etown Defeats F&M for First Time Since 1984, Blue Jays Win 5-4

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- For the first time in twenty years, the Elizabethtown College women's tennis team defeated Franklin & Marshall Sunday as the Blue Jays won 5-4 at Etown. F&M had won 14 consecutive matches against the Blue Jays since the last Etown win in 1984, and the last time the teams played, F&M had won 8-1 in 2003.

Etown took a 2-1 lead out of the doubles matches, as the number two tandem of senior Mel Parenteau (Marydel, MD/North Caroline) and junior Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) won 8-5 and the number three team of Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) won 8-6 for the Blue Jays. F&M's number one pair of Barbara Bee and Lizzy Dennenberg won 8-4 for the Diplomats.

The singles matches were hard fought, with all six matches going into three sets. Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) won a grueling 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 7-5 match at number one for Etown. At number two, F&M's Marie Papalia won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Smith added an Etown victory at number three with a see-sawing 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win, and the Diplomats' Beth Conner won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at number four. F&M won again at number five as Dennenberg picked up a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win, and Trimbey came from behind to pick up a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory at number six for Etown.

Elizabethtown will return to action Saturday, September 11 on the road against Commonwealth Conference rival Albright at 1:00 p.m.
