ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Etown Improves to 9-0 Overall, 5-0 in Conference, with 9-0 Shutout of Juniata; Blue Jays One Win Away from 1977 Program Record for Longest Season-Opening Win Streak HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- Elizabethtown continued to tear through the 2004 season Thursday with a 9-0 win over Commonwealth Conference rival Juniata College. The win improves the Blue Jays to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference and ties their season-opening nine-match winning streak in 1984, the second-best season-opening streak in the history of the program. The Etown record for most wins at the start of a season is 10, set by the 1977 team that went 10-0 overall. Juniata drops to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference with the loss. Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) earned a shutout win for Etown at number five singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. The number two doubles team of Mel Parenteau (Marydel, MD/North Caroline) and Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) also notched a shutout with an 8-0 win. Three Etown singles players gave up just one game in their matches, with Smith winning 6-0, 6-1 at number two, and with Parenteau and Lisa Mervine (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) each winning 6-1, 6-0 at number three and number six, respectively. The match was Mervine's first in the top six this season. The number three doubles tandem of Mervine and Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West), which had not played together since the middle of the 2003 season, was reunited and won in convincing fashion, 8-1. At number one singles, Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) won 6-2, 6-1, and Lisa Abel (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown), won 6-1, 6-2 at number four. The two teamed up to win 8-2 at number one doubles as well. Etown individuals will return to action Saturday and Sunday at the ITA Regional Tournament, which is being hosted by Mary Washington College.
