Elizabethtown Ties Record for Longest Season-Opening Win Streak, Swats Susquehanna 9-0 to Improve to 10-0; Parenteau Moves into 2nd Place in Singles Wins

ELIZABETHTOWN, Va. --- With a 9-0 shutout win at home over Susquehanna University Thursday, Elizabethtown College's women's tennis team tied its program record for the longest season-opening win streak ever. The Blue Jays, which improved to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the Commonwealth Conference with the win, tied the record set by the 1977 team, which finished its season with a 10-0 record. Furthermore, by defeating Susquehanna, which dropped to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the loss, Etown clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs Wednesday, October 6.

Etown began the match by sweeping the doubles competition. Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) won 8-6 at number one, Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Mel Parenteau (Marydel, MD/North Caroline) won 8-4 at number two, and Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) and Lisa Mervine (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) won 8-4 at number three.

In singles play, Trimbey logged a 6-0, 7-5 win at number six, Lander won 6-2, 6-1 at number five, Lisa Abel (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) won 6-4, 6-2 at number four, and Parenteau won 6-2, 6-4 at number three. Smith won a three-set match at number two, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. At number one, Shapiro won a comeback match after losing the first set 4-6 and being down in the second set. She came back to win the second set 7-6 with a 7-1 tiebreaker, and, with the sun below the skyline, she won a 10-5 match tiebreaker.

Parenteau improved to 34-14 in her career in singles competition, putting her in a tie for second place all-time at Etown in most singles victories. The program record is 38 singles wins.

Etown will return to action at home against defending conference champion Moravian College in the Blue Jays' final regular season conference match of 2004 Saturday, October 2. Start time is 1:00 p.m.
