Elizabethtown Shuts Out Immaculata 9-0, Blue Jays End 2004 Dual Season with Best-Ever 14-0 Record; Mel Parenteau Ties Etown Modern Career Singles Win Record; Emma Smith Breaks Etown Modern Season Doubles Win Record

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College wrapped up its fall 2004 dual match schedule with a 9-0 shutout of Immaculata University (7-5) Thursday. The Blue Jays completed the season with a best-ever record of 14-0, the team's first undefeated mark since 1977 and fifth undefeated season ever. Also, Etown senior Mel Parenteau (Marydel, MD/North Caroline) won her 38th career singles match, thereby tying the modern program record for most career singles wins, and first-year Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) picked up her 14th doubles win of the season, thereby breaking the modern program record for most doubles wins in a season.

Etown began the match by winning all three doubles matches by 8-1 scores. Stacy Shapiro (Audubon, PA/Methacton) and Kristy Trimbey (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) won at number one, Smith and Parenteau teamed up for the record-breaking doubles win at number two, and Heather Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett) and Lisa Mervine (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) won at number three. Incidentally, both Lander and Trimbey now have 13 doubles wins this season, just one behind Smith's current record total.

Shapiro cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at number one singles, and Smith won 6-2, 6-0. Parenteau's record-tying 6-2, 6-0 win at number three singles was the last match of the day to finish. Lisa Abel (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) won a 6-0, 6-0 blowout at number four singles, Lander won 6-0, 6-2 at number five, and Trimbey won 6-0, 6-2 at number six. Abel's win at number four gave her 34 career wins, tying her for third place in Etown's modern record book for most singles wins in a career.

Although Etown's dual match season is done, the Blue Jays will return to action at this weekend's flighted Middle Atlantic Conferences' individual singles and doubles championships that will be held Saturday, October 16 and Sunday, October 17 at Drew University.
