Etown Relay Team Wins Centennial/MAC 4x400m at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- The Elizabethtown College women's 4x400m relay team of Betsy Burroughs (Mt. Airy, MD/Linganore), Erin Lichti (Shickley, NE/Shickley Public), Kristin Lander (Accident, MD/Northern Garrett), and Carrie Kerna (McMurray, PA/Peters Twp.) has become the first entry in College history to win an event at the Penn Relays Carnival, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.

The Etown team won the Centennial/MAC 4x400m relay event that ran at 5:00 p.m. Thursday. Etown's squad beat teams from 13 other schools en route to victory in a time of 4:00.00 flat. The four broke the previous Etown program record in the 4x400m relay by 4.79 seconds. That record had stood for a nearly a year and was set by exactly the same lineup at the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships. The Blue Jay relay team also finished exactly two seconds shy of the NCAA Division III Championship provisional qualifying standard for the 4x400m in 2004.

Etown athletes will compete in three other events at the Penn Relays this week, with an entry in the women's 10,000m at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, an entry in the men's 10,000m at 10:25 p.m. Thursday, and an entry in the men's 4x400m at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

First held in 1895, the Penn Relays is the longest uninterrupted track & field meet in the United States and is now in its 110th year. Through the years, the Penn Relays has become one of the world's most famous track meets and attracts college, high school and Olympic development athletes from around the western hemisphere.
