Etown Places Third at Mideast Regionals; Tiffany Kulp Earns NCAA Division III Championship Berth; Three Blue Jays on All-Region Team

CARLISLE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown placed third out of 42 scoring teams and 47 total teams with 162 points at the 2005 Mideast Regional Championships, hosted by Dickinson College. Etown did not qualify as a team this year for the NCAA Division III Championships despite an identical regional finish as last year, when Etown did qualify. The reason why was because this year, the Mideast Region was allotted just one team berth for the national championships, as opposed to the three it had in 2004. However, Etown will be represented at the NCAA Championships for the third year in a row because one Blue Jay runner earned one of the region’s seven individual qualifying berths in the national championship meet.

Etown first-year student Tiffany Kulp (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) will be the Blue Jays’ representative in the national championships this year, as she placed 12th overall in a field of 293 finishers to gain the region’s seventh individual qualifying berth in NCAA Division III Championships. Her time on the 6k course was 23:09, and she also earned a spot on the All-Mideast Region team by finishing among the top 35. Kulp was the lone first-year student from the Mideast Region to receive an individual NCAA Championship berth.

Blue Jay junior Erin Deihl (Aaronsburg, PA/Penns Valley) was Etown’s number two finisher in 27th place overall in 23:35. Deihl, along with another Etown first-year student, Samantha Jones (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg), also earned All-Mideast Region honors by placing in the top 35. Jones placed 29th overall in 23:37.

Rounding out the Blue Jays’ top five finishers were two more first year students, Amanda Daws (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) in 45th place (24:17) and Allison Rahtes (Coopersburg, PA/Palisades) in 49th place (24:23). Four of Etown’s top five runners were first-year students.

Also competing for Etown were sophomore Erin Fisher (McEwensville, PA/Warrior Run), who finished 71st in 24:47, and graduate student Amanda Santore (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley), who finished 98th in 25:13. In the regional championships, teams are limited to fielding a maximum of seven runners.

The meet’s winning team and lone NCAA team qualifier was Dickinson College with 27 points. The 2005 individual regional champion was senior Emily Hulme of Dickinson in 22:07.

The 2005 NCAA Division III national championship meet will be held Saturday, November 19 and is hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. The women’s race will begin at 11:00 a.m.
