Mark Louden

Mark L. Louden received his A.B., M.A., and Ph.D. all at Cornell University. He is currently a professor of German at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he has been on the faculty since 2000. From 1988 to 2000 Louden taught at the University of Texas at Austin.

A fluent speaker of Pennsylvania Dutch, Louden has published extensively on various aspects of the language, including its historical development among both sectarian (Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonite) and nonsectarian speakers. He has also developed a Web site that is devoted to Pennsylvania Dutch and other German-derived varieties spoken in North America and features several sound clips and short interpretive essays.
