Nationally 13th-Ranked Elizabethtown Edges 17th-Ranked King’s (Pa.) 4-3 in Overtime WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College, which is currently ranked 13th in the nation by the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association (NFHCA) staved off a rally by 17th-ranked King’s College (Pa.) to win 4-3 in overtime on the road Friday and improve to 10-1 overall. King’s dropped to 10-1 overall with the loss, its first of the season.
The game actually began Wednesday, but it was suspended due to lightning early in the second half with Elizabethtown leading 2-0. Meg Policicchio (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) scored Elizabethtown’s first goal Wednesday, and Jen Pechart (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) added Elizabethtown’s second goal Wednesday off an assist by Brandy Spriggle (Beaver Springs, PA/West Snyder). On Friday, Pechart added another goal for Elizabethtown off an assist by Policicchio with 19 minutes left in the second half to give the Blue Jays a seemingly solid 3-0 lead. King’s began a rally at 15:39 left as Megan Farrell scored off a Sarah McGrady assist to cut Etown’s lead to 3-1. At 13:40 remaining in the second half, King’s cut the gap to 3-2 when Christina Glen scored off a Grace King assist. A Debbie Wychock goal assisted by Glenn for King’s tied the score at 3-3 with 12:12 left in regulation time. The game remained knotted as the second half expired. With 12:36 left on the clock in overtime, Spriggle scored the game-winning goal off a Megan Angstadt (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) assist. Spriggle redirected Angstadt’s cross pass into the goal.
King’s out-shot Elizabethtown 15-13 over the course of the game and 10-5 in the second half, and the host Monarchs held a 13-6 advantage in penalty corners. Elizabethtown, however, had an 11-9 advantage in shots on goal. Etown goalie Kristen Callaghan (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) made six saves, while King’s goalie Kari Leach had seven saves. Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Saturday, October 7 at Philadelphia Biblical University in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game. at Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
