Second Half Pounding Lifts Etown to Win over Lebanon Valley, 82-75
ANNVILLE, Pa. --- A prolonged Etown run in the second half lifted the visiting Blue Jays to an 82-75 victory over Lebanon Valley on the road Saturday. The win gives Etown a 15-7 overall and 7-5 Commonwealth Conference record, while Lebanon Valley, which was in first place in the conference prior to Saturday's game, drops to 14-9 overall and 8-4 in the conference with the loss.
Etown was down 41-34 at halftime, and the Blue Jays tied the game at 44-44 with 15:19 remaining in the game. Etown went up for the first time since the game's opening minutes with 14:42 remaining in the second half as a pair of Brian Schreiber (Mechanicsburg, PA/East Pennsboro) free throws gave the Blue Jays a 46-45 lead. By 9:15 remaining, Etown was down by six points, though, 61-55. Etown tied the score again a 4:16 when a Greg Adams (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) fast break layup made the score 72-72. Elizabethtown went ahead to stay with just 1:31 remaining in the game when Kyle Conrad (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) hit a pair of free throws to give the Blue Jays a 77-75 lead. Etown scored five more points in the game's final minute to seal the victory. In all, the Blue Jays out-scored Lebanon Valley 48-34 in the second half.
Jon Connor (Hershey, PA/Hershey) was Etown's leading scorer with 19 points, as he shot five-for-nine from the field, four-for-eight from three-point range, and five-for-eight from the free throw line. Ian Daecher (Lititz, PA/Warwick) scored 14 points and shot five-for-eight from the field and four-for-four from the free throw line. Jim Barron (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) came off the bench to score 11 points for Etown and shoot five-for-10 from the field. Conrad added 10 points and made five of six free throws. Darryl Brown (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) was Etown's leading rebounder with five boards, and he added six points.
J.D. Byers was Lebanon Valley's leading scorer with 26 points, and he hit four free throws and went seven-for-13 from the field. Dave Kaysan scored 16 points and shot seven-for-ten from the field, and Steve Buzinski and Evan Harlor added 11 points each for Lebanon Valley. Dan Hogan led Lebanon Valley in rebounds with six from off the bench.
Elizabethtown will return to action as the host of Messiah College in an 8:00 p.m. conference game Tuesday, February 17. It is Etown's final home game of the 2003-04 regular season.
