ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL Elizabethtown Edges Gettysburg 70-64 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown College improved to 5-5 overall and won its third game in a row by defeating Gettysburg College 70-64 at home Wednesday night. The visiting Bullets dropped to 2-8 overall with the loss. Gettysburg went up by as many as five points in the first half, but Elizabethtown closed the gap and carried a 36-34 lead into halftime. Elizabethtown’s largest lead of the game, 14 points, came with 12:11 left in the game with the Blue Jays up 56-42 following a layup and a free throw by Phil Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City). Gettysburg pulled back to within three points of the Blue Jays with 1:37 left as Etown clung to a 67-63 lead, and Elizabethtown held on for the win.
Elizabethtown had 17 steals as Gettysburg turned over the ball 25 times, while Gettysburg made 12 swipes on 18 Elizabethtown turnovers. The Blue Jays held a 35-33 edge in rebounds, and Gettysburg shot just 13-for-26 (50%) from the free throw line. Kris Kieres (Barnesville, PA/Mahanoy Area) led Elizabethtown in scoring with 14 points and in steals with five. Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts) added 12 points from off the bench and had three steals. Brian Goodwin (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) led Elizabethtown in assists with six and scored 11 points, and Bryce Rodgers (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro Area) scored 11 points as well.
Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School) shot 7-for-8 from the field and scored 16 points to lead Gettysburg’s offense, while the Bullets’ Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder) led all rebounders in the game with 10. He also had six assists and four steals to lead the Bullets. Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) and Corey Dorsey (Frederick, MD/St. Johns at Prospect Hall) each scored 13 points for Gettysburg, and Chris Nevolo (Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) scored 10 points. Elizabethtown will return to action in the Catholic University Tournament Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7. The Blue Jays will face Rutgers-Camden at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the first round.
