Moravian Defeats Elizabethtown 82-74
BETHLEHEM , Pa. --- Elizabethtown College fell 82-74 on the road Saturday afternoon to Commonwealth Conference rival Moravian College. The loss, Elizabethtown’s fifth in a row, dropped the Blue Jays to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference, while Moravian improved to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the Commonwealth.
Elizabethtown got off to a strong start and led 27-17 with 8:25 to go in the first half. However, Moravian rallied to tie the game 32-32 by the time 3:29 was left in the first half, and the host Greyhounds extended their run to take a 40-34 lead into halftime.
By the time 14:21 was left in the game, Moravian had extended its lead to 63-45. Elizabethtown followed with a 7-0 run to cut the gap to 63-52 with 11:46 to go. By the time 10:06 was left in the game, the Blue Jays had reduced Moravian’s lead to single digits, 67-58. With 8:36 left, a Luke Ledyard (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) layup cut Moravian’s lead to seven points, 69-62. Moravian then went on a 9-1 run to forge a 78-63 lead with 6:49 remaining on the clock. Moravian led 81-66 with 4:26 left. Beginning with a Ledyard tip-in at 3:30 to make the score 81-68, Elizabethtown again began to chip away at Moravian’s lead, but at that point the gap was too great to make up despite the Blue Jays’ out-scoring of Moravian 8-1 over the final 3:30. In that final stretch, Mike Church (Peach Bottom, PA/Solanco) scored six of Elizabethtown’s eight points on four free throws and a dunk.
Chad Piersol (Elverson, PA/Owen J. Roberts) led Elizabethtown in scoring with 16 points as he shot 7-for-13 from the field. Ledyard added 13 points and shot 6-for-11 from the field, and Church chipped in 10 points from off the bench, including a 6-for-7 performance from the free throw line. Greg Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) added nine points and four assists.
Eric Whitman led Moravian with 18 points, and Steve Wenderfer added 17 points for the Greyhounds and led all players in the game in rebounds with eight. Mark Franzyshen and Ryan Miller adde d 11 points each for Moravian, and Miller led all players in assists with five.
Moravian turned the ball over 32 times, while Elizabethtown committed 24 turnovers. The Blue Jays hit 27 out of 36 free throws (75%), but shot 39% (23-for-59) from the field and made just one out of 14 three-point attempts (7.1%). Moravian shot 48.1% (26-for-54) from the field, 11-for-22 (50%) from three-point range, and 19-for-22 (86.4%) from the free throw line. The Greyhounds also out-rebounded Elizabethtown 37-33.
Elizabethtown will return to action at home Wednesday, January 24 at home against Commonwealth Conference rival Widener University in an 8:00 p.m. game.
